The Future of the Nintendo Legacy

Nintendo Logo

Nintendo has been around for a long time; since September 23, 1889, when it was founded as Nintendo Koppai. This company has existed for a much longer period than what is commonly considered their competition. Sony, a fellow Japanese company, was started in 1946, and Mircosoft has only been around since 1975. You could easily look at these much younger companies and applaud them for all they have been able to accomplish is a shorter time, but it is Nintendo’s humbleness that sets them apart from so many other companies and is one of the things that I believe will keep Nintendo around for generations to come. Nintendo has been successful in bringing joy to people’s lives and creating its own unique culture. Nintendo is more than just a company and it has a legacy.

Wii U

wiiu21-jpg

I went into Gamestop about a month ago, looking to preorder the Wii U.  I was turned down.  They said they couldn’t handle anymore Wii U preorders.  I wanted to shell out my hard earned cash and they wouldn’t take it.  Wow.  I didn’t have a whole lot of money to blow anyway, so I pretty much at that point had given up on going for the Wii U (atleast for 2012).

Lately I had been reading about Wii U alot online, watching online video reviews, and just started getting really hyped for the machine.  First off, that Wii U Game Pad is beautiful, sleek, and black.  The screen is beautiful.  Way back when I had no reason to believe that the GBA third pillar would fall, I had envisioned then what the next gen Game Boy would be, and that image in my head looks very similar to the Game Pad we see before us today.  My guess at the time was that it would play Game Cube discs; not stream video from a console.  In any case, I had gotten myself so hyped, that I figured I owed it to myself to go to Gamestop and play the demo unit there.  I figured they must have a demo unit set up by now.  I had some errands to run, so I decided I would do those after I checked out the Wii U.  So I arrived there, messed with the demo unit, and figured what have I got to lose by asking if they had any.  I went over, and my question went something like “you guys don’t have the Wii U, don’t you?”  The response was “We do today, but not yesterday.  You are lucky.”  My heart went beating fast.  Hold on boy.  Remember you don’t have a whole lot of money here.  You are gonna regret it later.  I pulled the trigger, and my heart beated fast.  I put all my errands on hold and went home quickly.  That is my story for the day.  Seeing that it is Christmas season, I figured it wouldn’t be easy to get one, but I did today.  Lucky me.

Couple More Great Games On Club Nintendo

With the addition of game downloads to Club Nintendo I feel like its finally something to pay attention to. I’ve enjoyed the rewards for the most part but getting a extra game for buying games I’m going to get anyway is the best reward. Plus at 100 coins it couldn’t be easier. I personally just knocked out 20 post play surveys to pick these two Game Boy classics up which took about 20 mins. If you want these two titles or Cubello which is up for the same price you better hurry. The offer expires March 31st.

Demake Game Profile: Super Smash Land

Have you downloaded Super Smash Land yet?  If you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for?  It’s a free PC game (created by Dan Fornace) that was inspired by the Super Smash Brothers series.  It was just recently released on 9/14/11.  Super Smash Land is Smash Brothers as if it were released on the Nintendo Gameboy.  Think of the game, Battle Kid for the NES, except that it never went to cart.  The visuals, and sounds of the game are of 100% pure Gameboy retro goodness.  As if you had to have another reason to download it, I’ve gotten some serious hands-on with the game, and I’m happy to report that, for a non-Nintendo made game, it plays extremely well.  Well done.  I am very excited for this game.  Curiously enough, we have never gotten a Gameboy version of Smash Brothers.  This game fills in nicely in that regard.  If you love the Smash Brothers series, you’ll naturally love this game.

What Is That?!

How arrogant of me. How utterly arrogant. All these years I had always assumed I knew mostly everything there was to ever know about the Nintendo Gameboy. I was wrong. About a month ago, I discovered a rare Gameboy peripheral that I’d never seen before or ever knew existed until now – the Konami Hyperboy. How could I have not known about this for all these years is beyond me. It’s a peripheral that was released by Konami in 1991 (never released in the US) that turns your Gameboy into a tabletop arcade. I had always viewed the Gameboy itself as a hybrid system; a cross between an NES and a Game & Watch. With this peripheral, it pushes the Gameboy more into the Game & Watch tabletop territory, which is what I love about it. This has got to be the coolest GameBoy peripheral ever made.

Bring ‘Em On!!

On a recent podcast, Brad and Adam talked about some gameboy games that they would like to see on the 3DS virtual console service.  To complement that, here is my list of some personal favorites that I would like to eventually see on the service as well.
